So you want to start a blog? OK, but where do you start? The internet is an absolute minefield, with so many conflicting opinions. Who do you trust and at what point do you start? You probably just want to give up, as it is all too confusing?
Wait a minute. I was feeling like that a few months ago. I didn’t really know what I was doing. All I knew was that I wanted to start writing and express my thoughts in words.
I am now at a stage where, although not an expert, I consider myself to be pretty good at the basics.
Right, let’s get started. Here are a few ideas to help you on your journey into the blogosphere.
Why You Should Blog
- Blogging is now, probably, one of the best ways of communicating news and information;
- It’s a good way of expressing yourself and sharing your thoughts with like-minded people;
- It makes you, in my opinion, a better writer;
- You can make money from it. Personally, I blog solely for the sheer satisfaction it brings me.
4 Steps To Start A Blog
- Choose a blogging platform.
- Choose a host.
- Set up your blog.
- Design your blog.
Step 1 – Choose A Blogging Platform
I would recommend WordPress. It’s free to use and over 30% of all bloggers use it. WordPress is really easy to set up, provides a lot of free themes and has a great support network. It’s not worth looking at anything else, in my humble opinion.
Step 2 – Choose A Host
First of all, you need to decide whether you want to pay for your blog or get a free one.
If you go for the free option, you can’t get your own domain name and you don’t own your blog. It, basically, belongs to the host and they can delete it.
However, if you pay for a self-hosted blog on your own domain, you own your blog. There are a host (excuse the pun) of companies you can use to do this, at very competitive prices. Just shop around.
Step 3 – Set Up Your Blog
You need to decide on a domain name and a company to host your blog. Once you have made your choices, you will be able to install WordPress on your website, just by clicking on a button. When you have WordPress installed, you just go to your admin page and start writing your first post.
Step 4 – Design Your Blog
This is where you can start to have a bit of fun. You can install one of many free themes on offer, or buy a theme. If you are thinking of buying a theme, I would highly recommend StudioPress. Their themes, built on the Genesis Framework, are awesome. In case you were wondering, I do not make any money out of recommending them. You can customise your theme as much as you want to match the theme of your blog. You can also install plugins, if necessary. I am constantly tweaking, even now!
OK, that’s about it. You should now be good to go. I hope you enjoy blogging as much as I do!
